Making Caroline's Hei Matau The basic design was straightforward with the exception of the koru, the fun part were the layers that made up the pattern. The base started off huge, but I was unhappy with the bulk and wanted to lift the sculpture off the base. In the end I got a bit nervous I may have taken too much, and used some texturing for contrast. The grain in the stone worried me a little – you never know what you are going to find as you remove layers. But I think the grain adds something extra to the final finish – you definitely know this is fossilised rock when you see the layers present in this sculpture.
