Making Framed Hei MatauI loved the idea of doing a sculpture nestled within a square frame, with the straight sides accentuating the curves. I also wanted both sides to be different, in a sense a male and female sides. The masculine side stepped out, was textured, and had straight edges, all providing contrast and shadow. The female side stepped in, and was softer with curves. Having light pass through this piece was important to me, and removing the centre proved to be quite challenging. I ran into a number of hurdles in the creation of this piece, it required both patience and persistence but in the end it has become one of my favourite pieces. "We commissioned a sculpture from Brett having been inspired by some of his previous work. After consultation he created our magnificent "hei matau" which encapsulates both strength and beauty. We are absolutely delighted with the result and have had many favourable comments from family and friends." -John and Lizzie Ross - owners of Hei Matau
