The Making of Jackie's Morepork

Jackie's story about the passing of the family member and the appearance of the Morepork was both touching and compelling. I had to do it for her, but didn't simply want to do another stone bird. Jackie provided some pictures she had found to assist me – bless her.

I did let Jackie know that if I could do it tastefully, I would try to incorporate an element of Maori into the design.

The design was important, in my mind I saw a stylised Morepork – not one with feathers, it needed to be proud and strong, but still exhibit movement.

I was very grateful to stumble upon the design by Todd Couper because it portrayed exactly the presence I was looking for.
