The Making of Mania

This creation is called Mania (pronounced Maa nee rr). 'Ma' means to Overlook, Protector. 'Nia' means Special Gifts.

A group of friends commissioned this for a wedding present. It is for a couple with 6 children between them. One side represents the 5 children and their strong maternal connection, and the father discreetly standing in the background overlooking them all. The other side is all about the newly weds. Two koru shapes: one soft and curved, the other sharp and angular, but both connected, as one. It's a piece about new beginnings, a new journey together as one family.I used koru designs throughout the piece to represent this families new journey together.

Side one: The children were an important part of the design and I wanted to portray a closeness or connection to the parents. Layering the children gave them a sense of individuality and togetherness. Side two: I felt it was important to give the parents their own space as well...you know the children are there, but its just the parents you see. It's the coming together of these two people that make this possible.

To Dave and Nisha, I hope you enjoy MANIA, as much as I enjoyed bringing her to you.

FEEDBACK: "Brett, It's nearly a year since our wedding and the unveiling of the most amazing gift anyone has ever given to us. The carving was breath taking and shares pride of place in the foyer of our family home, so everyone who enters gets to experience the awe the carving commands. You truly captured our families essence and we really still after 12 months cannot find the words to express just how your creation has made us feel. You are an awesome artist and we both hold you in high esteem and will always keep you in our thoughts. Thanks again Brett for the inspiration."
