Making MAPIHI POUNAMU

The design was supposed to be simple - 3 koru side by side representing Togetherness of
Father, Mother, and Child. But the dimensions of the block meant that I needed to place the koru behind and in front of each other. In the end that contributed to the 3 dimensional look, and gave the piece a different feeling from each side, it also contributed to the difficulty.

The stone itself also proved to be very challenging, and frustrating. It had a very dense band of stone running through the centre. There was a very soft crumbly strip running alongside. Both of these variations required a lot of attention. It also made sealing the piece essential, to prevent future deterioration.

In the end I was happy with the result and delighted to see it go a couple that already owned one of my pieces.
