This sculpture involved numerous communications and input between various family members over a few months.

Surprisingly it all ran smoothly and culminated in a unique headstone for a highly respected and esteemed Kaumatua from the East Coast living In the King Country.

The Korowai (cloak) with a feather fringe represents his leadership among the whanau and Iwi. The Poutama pattern (stairway to heaven) represents his role as an educator and knowledge in Tikanga, and Te Reo Maori. The whale tail represents the East Coast. The sun encircling the Whale tail represents all of his tribes. And the koru around the Whale tail represent the whanau.

The family sent me photos and videos of their very professional installation.  It was a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of this mahi.
