Hei Matau I and Hei Matau II

At the January 2015 Upper Hutt Stone Carving Symposium I produced Hei Matau I, and Hei Matau II. My objective was to explore a different way of presenting medium sized sculptures, with the use of stainless steel rods to elevate the sculpture from the base. I fell in love with the flow and movement in Kerry Kapua Thompson's bone carving designs, and attempted the look in stone. In my opinion they are very different modern representations of the traditional Maori Fish hook (Hei Matau).
