WELL ROUNDED

I created this sculpture for a friend. She is very talented and intelligent and approaches situations from angles others may not have seen or recognized as being possible.

I kept seeing circles within circles much like bowls, when I considered a design that was right for her …but the circles were off centre, and tilted at different angles. And the sculpture was also tilted on an angle.

I wanted something totally random but clearly part of a whole. I wanted contrast and we got that from the off centre circles and tilts. I also created contrast in the base with the height, roughed out texture, and the straight edges. She named it "Well rounded"…..

"In my life I endeavor to live in a 'well-rounded' way, this also applies to raising my children, supporting family, friends and clients; I find this enables confidence, agility and choice in whatever direction life takes.

Now seeing this sculpture nestling into my garden it feels as if the bowls demonstrate the spiral of life, the ability to have access to the full range of possibilities in a generous, sweeping yet contained way. The freedom to be, and avail oneself of all that life has to offer, free of restrictions, yet with the support of a strong anchoring connection to the earth."

This is not my typical sculpture so my challenge was to see the best starting point and the right steps where I wouldn’t lose my design as I progressed. You will see how I managed to achieve that from my Making Well Rounded photos.
