The Ocean, the realm of Tangaroa, both the highway and foodstore of a sea-faring people. Brett wanted to capture the rhythmic and dynamic movement of a graceful ocean wave cresting and frozen in time through the medium of stone.
For Brett, the ocean has always been a place of reverence, and respect for its abundance and its dangers. Living close to the ocean, Brett loves how the surface sparkles as the sun sets and wanted light to play a part in the design. Brett incorporated sharp edges and smooth surfaces for different shadow effects, and a kōwhaiwhai pattern (representing the constant vitality and energy of the ocean) that allows light to pass through the sculpture, changing its appearance as the sun passes over.
The stone itself is from the ocean floor, made up of sea shells, coral, and other deposits over a vast period of time… it feels full circle that the sculpture represents something it once called home.
